How Should An Employer Define Marriage?

My 35th wedding anniversary is rapidly approaching. It occurs to me that the definition of marriage has become far more complicated than it was from when I was first married. The various states have conflicting definitions of marriage -- some have added the concept of a civil union; and, the federal government has changed its position on the issue as well.
